Spyros Polykalas
Professor, Head of the Department

Spyros Polykalas is a Professor in the Department of Digital Media and Communication at Ionian University. He received his Degree (BEng) from the Polytechnic Faculty of University of Patras in 1994, and Doctoral Degree in 1999 from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). From 1999 until 2001 he worked as a scientific associate in NTUA and from 2001 to 2008 he worked as Special Scientist in Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT). In 2008 joined the faculty of the Department of Business Administration of the Technological Educational Institute of the Ionian Islands, as an Assistant Professor. His main scientific interests are related to the Framework of Electronic Communication Services provision. In particular he has more than 20 years of experience in Electronic Communications Sector in several issues, such as: regulation and competition in electronic communications markets, digital media & communications, personal data and privacy, development of broadband networks, performance evaluation of broadband intelligent networks. He has participated in several relevant project at national and EU level, while he has published several articles in the above areas in international journals and conferences.

George Heliades
Associate Professor

Georgios P. Heliades is appointed as an Associate Professor at the Department of Digital Media and Communication of the Ionian University. He studied Computer Science in Greece, while receiving a master's degree from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, and a doctorate from the University of Loughborough, England. He has worked in England at the LUTCHI Research Center alongside pioneering names in the convergence of art and science. He has been involved in creative technology and the cognitive aspects of design, on which he has had a strong presence in international research programs and conferences, as well as a respectable number of publications in scientific journals. Spending five years in the European IT and telecommunications market as an executive, he returned to academia and the Ionian Islands Institute of Technology. He has taught at the Department of Audio from 2004 to 2013 (Head of Department 2007-2011) and at the Department of Public Relations and Communication from 2014 to 2018 (Head of Department). Since 2018, he has been serving as the Deputy Head of the Department of Digital Media and Communication at the Ionian University and as the Executive Director of the Media Influence and Interaction Laboratory. His research interests include the communication between people and technology, the digital arts and the application of digital media to education. He has recently directed and participated in a number of environmental and cultural IT projects.

Agisilaos Konidaris
Assistant Professor

Dr. Agisilaos Konidaris is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Digital Media and Communication at the Ionian University. PhD Computer Engineer, Entrepreneur, Assistant Professor and Department Head with extensive, hands on experience over the past 18 years in Digital Marketing, Digital Media, IT product design and management. Assistant Professor in Digital Marketing and Advertisement and director of the Mobile Applications and Tourism lab at the Digital Media and Communication Department of the Ionian University in Greece. Grew up and completed primary education in Lusaka, Zambia and afterwards moved to Greece. Previously Head of the Digital Media and Communication Dept. at the Technical University of the Ionian Islands in Greece. Work experience environment includes both the public sector (academics/research) and the private sector (as an entrepreneur who founded and ran a Digital Marketing firm in Greece for several years). Extensive experience in Digital Marketing, Project Management, Digital Tourism services, Team Management, Public Speaking and Problem Solving. Digital Marketing and Teaching are both a mission and a passion. Constantly seeking a work environment that encourages innovation and provides the opportunity for the implementation of new ideas.

Nikos Antonopoulos
Assistant Professor

Nikos Antonopoulos is Assistant Professor of Communication and New Technologies in the Department of Digital Media and Communication at the Technical University of the Ionian islands in Greece. He successfully completed his post-doctoral research at the Media Informatics Lab of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Media of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on Digital Marketing. He received PhD degree in the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He received his BSc in Information Technology and Telecommunications at the Technical University of Larissa and MSc in Cultural Informatics and Communication at the Aegean University. He has studied also, at the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education (ASPETE) and successfully completed the pedagogical training program. He has published in a number of scientific journals such as Studies in Media and Communication, International Journal of Marketing Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Computers in Human Behavior etc. His research interests include communication, online media, human-computer interaction, social networking and computer art.

Aggeliki Sgora
Assistant Professor

Aggeliki Sgora is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Digital Media and Communication at the Ionian University. She received the B.Sc. degree in Mathematics, the M.Sc. degree in Technologies and Management of Information and Communication systems, and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Networks from the University of the Aegean, Athens, Greece. Her PhD, and part of her post-doctoral research, have been funded by the European Union (ERCIM Marie Curie Postdoc Fellowship Program, 2013) and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (Research Enhancement Program 2003, Excellence II 2014). She has worked as a post-doctoral student at the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland and the University of Piraeus.

Since 2009, she has developed research activity in the areas of Wireless and Mobile Networks, Internet Technologies, Quality of Service and Experience, Software Defined Networks (SDN), and High Performance Computing.. The results of her research activity have been published in reputable journals, conferences and symposia, and she has more than 700 cross-references to her work. She has also presented her research activities at international conferences, and has participated as principal researcher in projects. She has also taught in undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Greek universities and technology institutions.

Dr. Anargyros Koumparelis is a Lecturer at the Department of Digital Media and Communication at the Ionian University.

Professional experience: 10 years as Senior Copywriter in various Advertising Agencies, 4 years as Bonds and Stock Market Dealer (Xaramis-Cox, Private Dealers ELDE, Praxis AXE-International Life SA), 3 years as Editing Councilor and Chief Editor at Scientific Marketing Magazine, Morax SA, 5 years as Project Manager at IDEKE (ΙΔΕΚΕ: Ινστιτούτο Διαρκούς Εκπαίδευσης Ενηλίκων), leading the ISIODOS Project: Farmers Training in the Secondary and Tertiary Sector of the Economy (ΗΣΙΟΔΟΣ: Εκπαίδευση Αγροτών στο Δευτερογενή και Τριτογενή Τομέα της Οικονομίας), Assistant Head of the Department of Digital Media and Communication at the Technical Educational Institute of Ionian Islands from 2012 to 2016.

Costas Petrakis
Lecturer

Costas A. Petrakis holds a doctorate in Media and Communication from Panteion University, Greece. His research interests relate to the theory and application of Communication and Corporate Social Responsibility. He is author of the book “The Subversive Laughter.” Dr. Petrakis has worked as copywriter and consultant on Applied Communication and CSR. He has taught at the Technological Educational Institutes of Athens and Patras. Since 2007, Dr. Petrakis has been faculty at the Department of Digital Media and Communication of the Ionian University, Greece.
