  • Summary:

This dissertation will attempt to record and evaluate the influence of the English language on the Greek reality through the communication that takes place via the digital world. Each language is a living organism, thus it is constantly changing, renewing, differentiating and being influenced by the prevailing social, economic and cultural conditions. In particular, the Greek language has undergone many changes throughout its life, however it remains unified. It is essential to research the influence of English on Greek everyday life. The influence of English in modern society is inevitable and ordinary. Nevertheless, we must acknowledge the evolution of the Greek language and examine whether the new additions that come mainly from the field of technology and digital media are assimilated. Within this dissertation there will be an attempt to record the percentage of the words of English origin which derive from new technologies, whether they come from professional usage of digital media, or from that part of the population that concerns young people who use social media. Mostly the influence that young people have received will be evaluated, as they are the ones who have the most contact with digital media, which has resulted in them having formed their own language code. The linguistic rules, the terminology and the vocabulary of the new technologies that are diffused in the Greek reality will be analyzed mainly through young people. In addition, we have to prove that there is an urgent need for all people in modern society, and even more so for those involved in digital technology, to become familiar with the language of digital technology.

The necessity of English terminology is indisputable. This project will record the sectors, the media and the language codes and then attempt to propose innovative ways and context, according to which Greek will be maintained in a harmonious coexistence with English. In order to achieve the objectives, a literature review will be applied at the theoretical level. At the same time, statistical research on the analysis of linguistic and cultural data from the English language in modern Greek society is necessary, as data will be collected through questionnaires so as to be recorded, catalogued and evaluated. In addition, a plethora of modern methods of qualitative and quantitative research will be incorporated, such as focus groups, DM content analysis, embedded primarily in the digital environment. The subject requires various research methods in order to approach new users.

Linguistic content analysis from digital sources will be done with a specialized content analysis software, since the content to be studied is in various forms of text, audio and video. Respectively, the educational software on which the educational method will be proposed is a modern specialization of existing software.
