Summary:

The main subject of this PhD thesis is the available resources (such as frequency spectrum, transmission power and antenna array elements) management scheme, which will be applied to Fifth-Generation (5G) and Beyond Mobile Telecommunication Systems.

The 5G system is expected to support various new use cases or usage scenarios. The International Telecommunications Unit (ITU) has defined three main use cases for 5G/IMT-2020 in the recommendation ITU-R M.2083: a) Enhanced Mobile Broadband Connectivity (eMBB), which includes services with high data rates and real time data processing requirements, b) Ultra-Reliable Critical Communication Services(URCC), which includes services with strong demand on real-time interaction and c) Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC), which includes both low-cost, low-power, long range MTC and broadband MTC services that are delay-sensitive.

The heterogeneous nature of the above use cases and the complexity of the 5G systems combined with the desire of optimizing the efficiency of those systems make the need of effective radio resource management mandatory. Furthermore, the same need is mandatory in the design of the Beyond 5G systems, which are the topic of many research activities and projects now days. The contribution in the fulfillment of this need will be the main target of this PhD thesis.

More specifically in the context of this thesis: a) an intense literature search about the state of the art radio resource allocation schemes adopted and proposed for 5G systems will be and there will carried out, b) new radio resource management schemes that take into account more parameters or aim on optimizing other key performance indicators than the already proposed schemes in the literature will be designed and proposed, the effectiveness of which will be investigated in theoretical and experimental manner.
