Sgora Aggeliki

Dr. Aggeliki Sgora is an Associate Professor of Informatics in the Department of Digital Media and Communication at the Ionian University, Greece. Her academic, research, and teaching activities focus on advanced Information and Communication Technologies, with particular emphasis on Artificial Intelligence, algorithmic decision-making, data governance, intelligent communication networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G/6G networks. Her current research interests also include responsible and human-centred AI, transparency and accountability of algorithmic systems, e-Government, data protection and privacy, as well as AI-driven and semantic-aware technologies.

She has served as Director of the Digital Transformation Lab at the Ionian University, while her research activities are more recently associated with the New Media Communication and Usability Lab, extending her work towards the human-centred dimensions of emerging digital technologies. Her teaching activities include courses in e-Government, Personal Data and Privacy, the regulatory framework for electronic communications and digital services, Internet technologies, and mobile technologies. She also supervises and co-supervises doctoral research in areas including data governance in public administration and the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques to resource management in 5G and beyond networks.

Her research spans a broad range of topics, from wireless and mobile networks, Quality of Service and Quality of Experience (QoS/QoE), cloud computing, Software Defined Networking (SDN), and IoT to contemporary applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, algorithmic decision-making, AI-driven network management, and semantic-aware systems. She has participated in more than ten national and European research and development projects and has contributed to their research activities and deliverables. Her research has also been supported through competitive European and national programmes, including the ERCIM Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme (2013), PENED 2003, and Excellence II (2014).

Dr. Sgora has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, and her work has received more than 1,300 citations according to Google Scholar. Her publications have appeared, among others, in IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials, ACM Computing Surveys, IEEE Systems Journal, Computer Communications, Pervasive and Mobile Computing, and Quality and Reliability Engineering International. Her recent research further addresses responsible and explainable AI, fairness, transparency, accountability and trust in algorithmic decision-making, as well as AI-driven and semantic-aware approaches for next-generation communication systems.

Dr. Sgora is actively involved in the international research community, serving as General/Program Chair, Technical Program Committee member, Session Chair, Special Session Organizer, and reviewer for international conferences and scientific events. She is an Editorial Board Member of Sensors (MDPI) and has been invited to review for several international journals, including IEEE Communications Standards Magazine, IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine, Elsevier Computer Communications, and Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks. She is also a member of the IEEE, IEEE Communications Society, and Marie Curie Alumni Association, and is actively involved in international scientific activities related to Artificial Intelligence, advanced communication networks, and emerging digital technologies. Her longstanding reviewing and conference activities are also documented in her academic record.

Dr. Sgora holds a BSc in Mathematics, an MSc in Technologies and Management of Information and Communication Systems, and a PhD in Computer Networks from the University of the Aegean. Her doctoral research focused on “QoS Provision and Resource Allocation in Contemporary Wireless Networks.” She has also conducted postdoctoral research at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the University of Piraeus. Her doctoral and part of her postdoctoral research were supported by European and national competitive funding programmes.
